It May Sound Cliché, But “Be” In The Moment

Do you spend your day with your body doing one thing, and your mind doing another? While you are working on that important report, are you thinking about the next item on your to do list? Or the dishes you left in the sink? Or the argument you had with your spouse?

I’m as guilty of that as the next person, but that doesn’t mean I am not actively trying to improve!

When you engage in this type of mind/body split activity, you end up short-changing both things. You are not fully committed to the activity you need to do, nor are you giving your whole mind to whatever else you are thinking about.

Not good!

Try to focus on the immediate task at hand, giving it your full and uncompromising attention. Don’t check that email which inconsiderately popped up at an inopportune time, don’t let your mind wander. Just do it!

Similarly, when you are NOT at work, give your whole self, mind AND body, to what you are doing then.

At the gym, concentrate on your workout. With your kids, give them your exclusive and undivided attention.

In fact, that is what got me thinking about this in the first place…my children! More clichés, but they grow up so, so fast. Yesterday I was changing a diaper and today I am looking at colleges. How did that happen? And, more importantly, what did I miss when I had my mind on work when I should have been in the moment with my children?

That can never be recreated, it is just gone.

I firmly believe that it is never too late to make a vigorous and wholehearted attempt to BE THERE in that particular moment with everything you do.

I know I’m going to try…how about you?
