Bumper Car

Are You Getting Taken for a Ride, or Are You in the Driver’s Seat?

Everyone likes to be in charge of their own day, right? It’s nice to have certain parameters and expectations of what we’re meant to do each day, certainly; but having ultimate control over what you do can really make the difference between a great day and a day full of SMH.

I love my job, and almost everything about it. I have a list of items I need to accomplish each day, while allowing for “new business,” things that crop up unexpectedly and must be dealt with that day. Some days are busier than others, some days have a frenetic pace, some a more leisurely one. Regardless of the speed of the day’s events, I normally feel right on top of things, high in the saddle, firmly in the driver’s seat. Except when I don’t.

Have you ever had one of those days when you feel like you’re being taken for a ride in a bumper car, like you did as a kid at the state fair? You’re not the one in control, some nefarious, invisible certifiable lunatic alien is driving you around, and you’re a mere passenger getting flung from side to side, going full steam straight into one immovable object after another, preparing for the next onslaught, until your crazed chauffeur unexpectedly changes direction yet again, flinging you into the next obstacle.

Mommy, save me! I had one of those days recently, and I went home figuratively bruised all over, wondering what became of my ordered and orderly life.

Happily, those days are rare and, following an excellent night of sleep, I was ready, if not a little trepidatious, for what the next day would bring. All went back to normal thankfully, but I was still left with this song firmly implanted in my head:
